::. Answering your questions about purposeful journal writing...

::. I'm still having a hard time in writing in my journal. Once I open it and try to write, I become very distracted and can't think of anything to put down. What should I do?

You may want to freewrite, stating on paper that you are having a hard time in getting started and then explaining why. You may be dealing with other pressing problems, or coping with pain or the weather. Perhaps you are looking forward to something (or not) and cannot stop thinking about it. Instead of fighting this tendency, use it as a writing prompt and state what is distracting you on paper.
You may also feel tempted to put the journal down and return to it another time, but doing this may worsen the problem. Instead, give yourself ten to fifteen more minutes to write about the distraction before putting the journal away.

::. Can I focus on one thing in my journal, such as a favorite hobby or interest --- and just write about that instead?

Certainly! You will more likely find plenty to write about, such as insights, problems and solutions. You may want to include relevant information from newspaper or magazine articles and use that information as a prompt of sorts. And as you fill in the pages of your journal, you can also think of specific audiences who may be interested in reading about what you have to say.

::. I travel a lot and will not have room for another bulky item such as a notebook or a portable computer. How can I still keep a journal?

You might want to consider a smaller item, such as a writing pad or better yet, index cards. Just be sure to include a date on each sheet of paper or card. Carrying a few cards is not only more convenient, but motivating as well. As you wait for your next plane or train, you can pull out one or more index cards and write to pass the time as well as record ideas immediately.
